Artists Notes: All Hallows

Posted by Black Baccara on

All Hallows is a complexly beautiful blend inspired by the rituals that honor the dead in various faiths from October 31 through the first week of November. It’s both dark and soothing, much like the atmosphere during this time of year. There are libations, flower offerings, burning incense, a bit of fruit, and the four elements flowing through this enchanting fragrance. Highlights include a deep earthy bouquet of frankincense, myrrh, and galangal root. Accented by top notes of basil, nerolina, and soft bursts of citrus from yuzu, this haunting blend reveals ylang ylang, petitgrain, and autumn leaves as it unfolds....

Artist's Notes: Lacrimosa

Posted by Black Baccara on

Lacrimosa is a deep, haunting, melancholy botanical blend inspired by Mozart's Requiem In D Minor. Lacrimosa is the Latin word for "weeping/tearful" and also derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, an aspect of The Virgin Mary. As the drydown begins, my blood accord darkens the herbal with a touch of earthy metallic. While this blend lingers on the skin,...

Another of my new blends coming September 10th. Green fog, green mist, mysterious tinctures from a curious cabinet —these are the visuals that inspired my new Frog’s Breath perfume. Heavily green aromas in perfumery are most often associated with the spring and summer months, but here I wanted to do something with the “Halloween greens” and the greens from the darkly beautiful side. I’ve also watched The Nightmare Before Christmas so many times that its symbolism is permanently etched into my subconscious and definitely has leaked out into the inspiration for this blend. This is an earthy, foggy, green perfume....

Artist's Notes: Mansion Ghosts

Mansion Ghosts is a new blend that will launch September 10th. For me, the ghostly and witchy themes in my work are more than just an aesthetic; they are my memories, experiences, and my pretty much incessant yearning to somehow capture liminal spaces and fleeting emotions. I spend a lot of time wandering through mansions and mansion gardens because we have a ton of historic mansions here in New England and they are one of my favorite places to spend time. Not surprisingly, most of them are haunted, mostly with benign ghosts or heavy memory imprints —but ghosts nonetheless. This...

Artist's Notes: The Last Carousel

Posted by Black Baccara on

a submerged carouselhauled from the sea;a flood of horsesin salted reins, music welded to a tide, this is how you will be stalled from hell. -Kalliope Amorphous  I have such a complex relationship with each blend that I make and I think about and obsess over them probably more than anything I work on. Yet, for brevity’s sake I try to keep it short and sweet in the listing descriptions! Many people just want to know the notes and don’t necessarily want to hear diatribes from my Dr. Frankenstein mind about creation process, but with this new collection coming up I thought...
