This unique pendant features a copy of the painting Medusa by Arnold Bocklin (1878), overlaid into a seashell fragment using traditional decoupage techniques, gilded edges, and finished with clear varnish. The reverse of this pendant shows the beautiful pattern of the seashell.
These seashell fragments are collected from the shorelines of Rhode Island. In repurposing these seashell fragments, I am inspired by ancient art fragments as well as the Japanese concepts of Wabi-Sabi and Kintsugi, which highlight the beauty and history of objects that are broken or imperfect. Each fragment has tumbled through the ocean to find a new home in a piece of wearable art which highlights the beauty of its brokenness.
Suspended from 23 inches of buttery soft vintage black velvet ribbon.
