Book Inspired Perfumes

Book Fair was my most popular fragrance during last year's autumn/Halloween launch. I couldn't keep it in stock for more than a few days, and I know many people fell in love with it because I received so many requests for more of it after it had sold out for good. So, I decided to bring it back this year as part of my autumn launch. I will also make it part of the permanent collection as soon as I'm able to.  Since I'd hoped to bring back Book Fair, I made it a point to finish up the other...

How To Use Conjure And Ritual Oils

The terms conjure oils, magical oils, ritual oils, and full moon oils are used interchangeably in my products. My spiritual practice pulls from my ancestral roots (European and West African) and is centered in folk Catholicism, Vodun, and hoodoo. All of my ritual oils, conjure oils, and spiritual items are crafted artfully and intuitively to honor the spirits that walk with me, honor the traditions of my ancestors, and to help elevate others through the magic of these paths. Perfumes have been used throughout the ages as an integral part of rituals, both personal and magical. They may be used to ceremonially anoint the body as...

Artist Notes: Halloween Shop Perfume

We used to have a costume shop called Morris Novelty in Rhode Island. It was a vast, creepy warehouse in an old mill filled with Halloween costumes, masks, theater costumes, theater makeup, props, and more. Most of their stock was vintage, and it was essentially a Halloween shop that was open year-round. This magical and unusual space was around since the mid-'80s until it burned down around 2011. What I remember most about visiting it as a child was the smell. The entire atmosphere felt eerie and charming simultaneously. The unique fragrance that permeated it —a melange of vintage vinyl,...

Autumn And Halloween Perfume Collection Artist Notes

This year's collection overflows with nostalgic places, liminal spaces, and reveries of fairytales. I began crafting these blends almost as soon as winter had passed and when the yearly longing for autumnal things started to creep in. My heart is always in the dark season, and these fragrances represent the memories, spaces, and places that I found myself longing for as I retreated to my perfume lab for most of the summer. Each blend represents an autumnal place, real or imaginary, that I could only reach through the transportive power of fragrance.  This collection includes six new limited...

Do Perfumes Expire? Perfume Longevity And Aging

One of the most magical things about perfumes is their potential to age like a fine wine. An integral part of crafting a perfume is the maturation process, during which all of the components of the perfume formula integrate fully with the carrier (whether alcohol or oil). I try to age as many of my formulas as possible before dispatching them. The maturation process ensures that the final form is the same as my early vision for it, gives me a better representation of how the fragrance will continue to perform with age, and eliminates the need for the collector...
